Found some older Monster High dolls last night

Since Mattel has been shipping Monster High dolls left and right.  We have been heading out to check Walmart's late night stocking.   I still haven't found any of the new dolls in store yet.  I broke down and ordered the DDG dolls from Toys R Us and Roller Maze from Amazon.     I just hate paying for shipping.   The DDGs arrived yesterday and I think I am going to post a review about those.  They really are beautiful.   The Roller Maze should arrive sometime next week.

Our first stop on the monster hunt was the stop of the night.   We picked up a Holt and a DOTD Clawdeen.  SCORE!!!   It is nice to see that some of the older dolls are being shipped back out.  I am not sure if they are coming back out or if it is just getting rid of older stock.

Holt was regular price but the Clawdeen was $15, which was the clearance price from a few months ago.   If you are looking for some of the older dolls, start checking your stores.  I have heard from others that the Wave 1 and Wave 2 dolls have been popping up in Targets and TRUs.   But, I think the best success has been Walmarts.

Anyone else having trouble with Blogger?

I just was wondering if anyone else was having any issues with Blogger?   I have made several posts and there is some part of it that appears highlighted.    I have gone back in and tried to edit each of the post, but it doesn't work.    I can't figure out why it is highlighted.

Southwestern Stuffed Squash

With our garden doing well this year, we currently have an abundance of squash.  I have been trying to find new ideas for preparing it.   Tonight, I made stuffed squash and just served it with a simple mixed green salad.   It makes for a great summer time meal.

Recipe:

2 to 4 medium sized yellow squash
1 small onion, chopped
1 can of mexicorn, drained
1/2 tsp. granulated garlic
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. cumin
1/4. tsp ground pepper
pinch of salt
1/2 cup shredded colby jack and pepper jack cheese
bread crumbs

Wash the squash and place into boiling water. Boil about 8-10 minutes or until tender enough to scoop the inside of the squash.   Remove squash from water, allow time to cool and cut in half .

Saute onions, when onions are almost done add the mexicorn, spices, bread crumbs, and cheese.  Mix together well.

Fill the squash halves with the stuffing mixture.   Sprinkle a little extra cheese and bread crumbs on top. Bake at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes.

Monster High Mania, new dolls are out

Well Monster High moms, have you gotten those new dolls yet?  Or are you going crazy trying to find them? I fall into the second group.   The new Roller Maze, Dead Tired, and Dot Dead Gorgeous have been popping up in stores.    That means a lot of late night  runs to Walmart to check and see what they are stocking.

Last Friday, I did order the Dot dolls from Toys R Us.  However, I have no idea if I will actually get them!! Most of the time, TRU is pretty good about orders.  This time, I have no information about my order.  I have no shipping information and they haven't emailed me saying my order is cancelled.   I know a lot of people who ordered the dolls Friday.  Some have gotten partial orders, others just completely got cancelled.  What is going on TRU??

Today, I ordered all 4 of the Roller Maze dolls from Amazon.  They were priced at 14.96 each.  I figure that is pretty to close to what they would cost at Walmart.   Plus, if I get them, I figure the little extra is what I would have spent on gas after driving to every store in a 50 mile radius.  I am really excited about these dolls.  I love Ghoulia's outfit! and I am glad that they are introducing another Operetta.
It is sad, because I am not sure who is more excited about the new dolls, me or my daughter.  But it is fun, because it is something that she and I can share and collect together.

I am the most excited about adding the 2011 SDCC (San Diego Comic Con ) exclusive to our collection.  Since really getting into MH, I have been drooling over this doll forever!   I guess I just really relate to Ghoulia.   She is kind of a fangirl.  She enjoys cosplay, reading comics, and going to conventions.  Just a few of the things that I enjoy as well.   If you have followed my blog for a while, you are probably familiar with my Star Wars costumes.  We got her off of Ebay, which as a general rule I avoid buying MH dolls there.  But, it is impossible to get her since she was an exclusive.  Now, I need to work on getting a SDCC 2010 exclusive Frankie.  Well, if you are out hunting the new Monster High dolls all I can say is GOOD LUCK!!

My new esty items.

I have been working on getting my etsy shop back up and going.  During my pregnancy, I lost interest in blogging and my etsy store.  I just didn't feel creative.   I have several items listed now and hoping to add a few more in the next couple of weeks.

A couple of the items listed are inspired by Star Wars.   We are going to be attended some Sci-Fi conventions this summer.  So, I thought it would be fun to create myself and others some custom shoes.

The Admiral Ackbars are inspired by one of my all time favorite Robot Chicken sketches, Admiral Ackbar cereal.   Plus, since I dress up as Ackbar, I needed these for trooping.   I mainly created them for myself, but there might be others out there that will appreciate them.

The other pair of Star Wars inspired shoes listed in my Esty store is inspired by R2-D2.   I love R2!   There are times when I don't wear my costume and just operate R2.  But, I really have loved wearing them with jeans to run to the store.

I am proud to say that I let my geek flag fly. Please stop by and check out my etsy listings.

Lego Superhero Shields

This past weekend Toys R Us held a free Lego event.   When I saw this event posted, I knew that we had to go.  You could go into your local TRU to build a superhero shield.   You could build Batman or Superman.   I love when they have these events.  They really are a lot of fun for kids and adults.  I saw quite a few adults enjoying themselves.

I am trying to figure out a way that I could turn these Lego shields into book ends for my son.  I thought they would look really cool and it would be a great way to display them.

The superhero Lego sets have caused a lot of excitement in our house.  I absolutely love the mini figures for these sets.  They are adorable!!   Plus, with the new Lego Batman 2 video game release, my son is in heaven.

Flea Market Finds: Disney Lunchbox, Harry Potter, and the Batmobile

I thought I would share a few of my recent flea market finds.  I picked these up 2 weekends ago at a flea market up in NC.

The first is a vintage 1976  Disney World metal lunch box.  It is in well used condition.  But I just absolutely fell in love with it.  I should take some more pictures of it. The back has this great graphic of the Country Bears.  The sides depict different rides and dattractions at Disney World.   I paid $8 for it.  I think it will make a great display/storage piece.

The next item I picked up was the  Wizard's Sweets Harry Potter doll.  It is from 2001.  I didn't really start collecting anything Harry Potter related until about 2 years ago.  I picked up a Hagrid and a few other action figure from the first movie at the flea market.    I paid $2 for this Harry.  I love it because he comes with a chocolate frog package and a little frog bracelet that sadly no longer smells like chocolate.   I would love to find the matching Hermione doll.

Lastly, is the Batmobile!   I picked this up at Walmart.  I love Batman and yes, this chick does dig the car.   I recently started picking up the Hot Wheels that are from movies and tv.   I also have the A-Team van and Ecto 1.   I am currently looking for the other versions of the Batmobile and Kitt from Knight Rider.

Dear Tomato Sandwich,

You truly are one of the greatest things about Summer! Summer officially starts in the South, when tomatoes hit the bread.   I love being able to pick those beautiful sun ripened orbs out of my backyard.  Your friends from the grocery store just can't compare.   A fresh loaf of Bunny bread, a jar of Dukes, and lots of fresh cracked pepper is really the only accessories a luscious tomato needs.

Thank you Summertime,
L

Avengers Brithday Party Ideas

My family loved the Avengers!   My son, who's birthday isn't until December has already requested an Avengers themed birthday party.   Here are some great ideas to make a super hero themed birthday party an epic success.

Invitations: Start your party off right with the perfect invitation. You can make your own postcard invitations with cardboard cut-outs of bright blue painted stars, and include the details about your party in a thin black marker. Decorate the front of each with classic comic book words like POW!, ZAP! And WAM!

Décor: The Avengers bring together 6 epic superheroes. Create your own easy decorations with cardboard cutouts of spiders and paint them black, neon green head’s of The Hulk and classic American flags for Captain America and, throughout the party, use bold colored streamers, which will add some mystery to the room.

Centerpieces: Choose your favorite Avenger and decorate the table around that character. Use lots of primary colors, since comic strips are usually blue, yellow and red. Print outs of comic book pages covered in contact paper make great placemats. Blanket your tables with these to tie the décor together and include stars, spiders and Hawkeye cut-outs on wooden sticks around the table with silver confetti.

Menu: Mini snacks such as cut-out tea-sandwiches make great finger food. Look for cookie cutters in shields, stars and spiders to create these treats. For Incredible Hulk themed beverages, create trays of green ice cubes by freezing water with green food color, and WOW! guests as their clear citrusy beverages transform color before their very eyes.

Party Favors: As a parting gift, place a few Avenger designed cookies in a cellophane bag and close with a gold twist-tie – your guests can enjoy the party for days to follow with these treats!”

RECIPE

1.    Whip up a batch of your favorite sugar cookie recipe and use a cookie cutter to make character cookies.  They make Superhero cookie cutters in the shape of many Avengers heroes.  You can also use any oval shaped cookie cutter and instead fill in the details with your decorating.  Once your cookies are baked and cooled, you are ready to begin decorating.

2.    You can make your own royal icing (See:  How to Make Your Own Royal Icing included below) or use store-bought.  Color with food coloring to achieve the various colors you want for decorating.  We recommend green (for the Hulk), yellow, blue, black, white, and brown.  Place each color in a piping bag.

3.    Begin by outlining the cookie in your base color.  (If you were starting with The Hulk, outline the entire shape in green.  Color in your outline with green icing and cover the entire cookie.  (You can actually use a paintbrush to “paint” your cookie.)  Give the base a few minutes to dry and choose your next color.  For The Hulk’s hair, outline his hairline in black and proceed to fill in with black icing.  You can continue to draw features in and watch your character come to life.

How to Make Your Own Royal Icing
  • 3 egg whites, at room temperature.  We prefer dehydrated egg whites, available at most supermarkets.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • food coloring (optional)
Mix above ingredients with a little warm water until smooth.  Add food coloring.
